The Robotic Deriveter System, built for the U.S. Navy by Southwest Research Institute, consists of a large industrial robot mounted on a pneumatic tire, electric powered vehicle. The robot and a 150 lb. complex end effector are controlled by a host computer to locate rivets using vision, free-hand drill within .005' (.127 mm) of rivet center, punch out rivet shanks, and inspect the hole using an eddy current probe. Described is the complete system with emphasis on unique features, problems encountered, and solutions employed in meeting speed (30 second cycle time) and accuracy requirements.
