Sealants are laid on the seams of a car body at a relatively high speed. The seam path is three-dimensional, and the orientation of the surface normal may vary or abruptly change along a seam. Seams can generally be categorized in two classes: exterior and interior. Exterior seams, on which sealants are extruded, require accuracy and uniformity of applied sealant bead. Interior seams, on which sealants can be sprayed or extruded and then brushed, demand a robot with high maneueverability to access door and window openings. Due to stackup tolerances and locating variances of a car body, path correction in real time using inputs from vision or touch sensor is often required. The requirements of a robot in such an application have far-reaching implications.
