The exploitation of plastics in the motor industry has been a resounding success for the plastics industry. With new applications being rapidly exhausted, the next challenge is the medium/high stress areas, notably in underbonnet applications. The relative costs and performance of plastics compared to aluminium now favour the former, in particular the thermoset materials. Dunlop have developed a plastic water pump which uses advanced lost metal core technology to produce the optimum internal shape. Other related products are also being developed. This paper discusses the development of the pump and the envisaged advanced flexible manufacturing system which is required for minimum part cost.
