This paper describes a small, four-gimbal directional gyro platform that can be used to obtain heading, pitch and roll information for the guidance and control of an underwater vehicle. It covers the basic principles of operation, its construction, and the advantages and disadvantages for underwater use. The four-gimbal directional gyro was developed, initially, for the oil industry to survey wells. The device measures slant angle, slant angle bearing, and tool face orientation in wells that have large 'kick off' angles. The purpose of this presentation is to describe its use for roll and pitch stabilization of underwater vehicles and to obtain accurate, long term heading information.
