Based on a three dimensional hydrodynamic theory, the behaviour of a four and an eight column semi-submersible in head and beam sinusoidal regular waves is discussed. Predictions of the hydrodynamic coefficients, wave induced forces and responses in the six degrees of freedom for both rigs are presented and compared, as well as a limited comparison of theoretical results determined from strip theory and boundary integral-finite element methods. Included in the paper is a discussion of the predicted responses when the present analysis accounts for the influences of catenary mooring lines when the rig is stationary and of small forward speed when the rig is in transit. In addition and where possible, all predictions are compared with experimental data and reasonable agreement is shown to be achieved.
