Simulation of the behavior of ocean tows subject to severe environmental forces or transient operating conditions is described. Methods developed at HYDRONAUTICS ,Incorporated from ship maneuvering simulation are described and used to study the behavior of a number of cases of barge towing and towing of a disabled vessel. Such methods can be used to study important aspects of behavior in the horizontal plane including control of the tow, speed of advance of the tow and dynamic loads. Quantitative studies using such methods can lead to greater efficiency and safety of towing operations through improved planning, training and design of towing hardware. Results of simulations for the ocean tow of the barge Jasmine's Turtle, as described in the first Symposium, are compared with measured and observed behavior of the tow in varying environmental conditions. Results of simulations of the initial stages of the towing of a disabled vessel for a range of environmental conditions are also presented.
