Modern industry recognized the need for reducing production, inventory, and distribution costs. This dissertation develops models to minimize these costs by determining the best policy concerning location, production, and distribution. A deterministic location problem can be described as the problem of finding the location of sources in some specified space to serve certain destinations whose locations and requirements are known such that some objective function is optimized. A commonly used location objective is often characterized by the minimization of the sum of the total transportation costs. When the inventories are held at a source for a considerable time while trucks deliver requirements to destinations, inventory-holding costs (HC) are incurred. These costs are dependent on the sequence of visiting destinations as well as the source's location. In this dissertation, we consider the joint problem of location of the source and sequencing of the delivery vehicles to minimize inventory-holding and transportation costs. Heuristic methods to solve this problem are developed when the single source is served by a single truck, and then extended to the multiple-truck case. As a special case, an exact solution algorithm is developed in the case of a straight line as a solution space.
