A gas turbine-battery hybrid system, which is adopted as power plant to propell a passenger car, has been in development to seek a good fuel economy. An experimental vehicle powered with a small gas turbine engine and lead-acid batteries as an energy storage device has been assembled and evaluated. Road load tests on the experimental vehicle indicate that fuel economy (miles/gallon) in 10 mode driving cycle for the vehicle is 84.5 % of that for a conventional vehicle of identical weight and acceleration performance. With continued development the fuel economy improvement of 37 % over the conventional vehicle is feasible. Based on all results, a feasibility of the gas turbine-battery hybrid system including apparent significant advantage in the fuel economy is confirmed.
