An essential part of the planning and engineering investigation for the Ocean Margin Drilling Program was the study and analysis of the dynamic positioning system required to keep the drilling vessel on-station. Since the Government-owned ship, GLOMAR EXPLORER, has been selected as the most probable cost-effective drilling platform, a dynamic positioning system study relative to this vessel was made. This paper presents the critical operating requirements, an overview of the design and analysis of the dynamic positioning system components, and a description of the system recommended for the Ocean Margin Drilling Program. In addition, simulation results of the predicted system performance for a typical squall environment are also presented.
