To reduce the operating cost of ships, it is very effective to use the waste heat energy contained in the exhaust gas of the main engine for generating the electric power required on board the ship. For this purpose, we developed the new control method for a turbo generator and shaft generator/motor system. By using this new method, following merits are obtained: Turbo generator can generate the maximum power corresponding to the steam conditions at all times. When the shaft generator/motor is operated as the shaft motor, the fuel consumption of main engine is reduced by using the surplus electric power effectively. When the shaft generator motor is operated as the shaft generator, the shortage electric power is not only backed up but diesel generator operation or additional burning of the auxiliary boiler is dispensed with. In this paper, we introduce this new control method for this energy-saving system with its test results on board ship.
