The inception of cavitation on marine devices such as hydrofoils or propellers, hydraulic turbines, and pumps is associated with the blowup of the noncondensable microbubbles existing in the fluid. The conventional cavitation inception index, which is based on the vapor pressure of fluid and the dynamic pressure of the flow system, was found to be a deficient parameter for controlling the cavitation process. Based on the mechanics of microbubbles, a new set of parameters were derived. The results indicate that the apparent dependency of the cavitation inception index on the Reynolds number, given in many test reports, is found to be largely due to the effect of surface tension. A functional relationship of the cavitation inception index with respect to the surface tension parameter and model sizes is given to characterize the cavitation of microbubbles.
