A rim section fatigue testing technique was employed to evaluate the actual fatigeu properties of the steel rims which were made of four conventional HSLA steels and four dual phase steels. The rim section fatigue S-N curves at the stress ratios of R = 0.1 and 0.5 for these steels were presented. Finite element method was employed to determine the stress levels corresponding to the test loads used during the test. The microstructure near the fatigue crack of the tested sample was correlated to the corresponding rim section fatigue strength at 107 cycles. A correlation between the rim section fatigue strength deterioration and material imperfections was revealed. A simple regression analysis was conducted in order to illustrate the relationship between the rim section fatigue strength and the as-received tensile strength. It was concluded that the dual phase steels had the same rim section fatigue performance as the conventional HSAL steels, and the presence of material imperfections wer detrimental to the rim section fatigue strength for both dual phase and conventional HSLA steels.
