Current National and proprietary codes for the design and fabrication of onshore and offshore structures are normally meant to specify the minimum standard to obtain an acceptable probability of failure. They normally assume the structures to be inspected and maintained to the extent necessary to keep up this low probability of failure during the life time of the structure. The codes are not, and should not be, written to optimize the total economy of the structural design, construction, operation, inspection, maintenance and repair. The purpose of the present project is therefore to give recommendation for modifications of the minimum requirements to obtain an optimal solution considering the different expenses throughout the lifetime of the structure, i.e.from start of construction and till removal.
