The AiResearch Casting Company (ACC) is fabricating silicon nitride components for use in the Garrett/Ford AGT 101 engine development program. Fabrication approaches were selected based on their suitability in an iterative development approach, on component size and on material property requirements. Reaction bonded Si3N4 static components are being fabricated to near net shape by slip casting or injection molding methods. Fabrication parameters for components of varying cross section, complexity and size have been developed. Sets of static hardware including stators, turbine shrouds and inner and outer diffusers have been successfully screened individually and as an assembly in cyclic simulated engine conditions to 2100 F. Sintered Si N radial rotors are being developed using a slip casting appraoch. Fabrication of this thick-hub/thin-blade part has required careful mold preparation and drying cycle development. Sintering development is being performed at both Ford and ACC. Rotors have been successfully tested in room temperature spin testing to 115,000 rpm and by cyclic thermal transient simulation.
