The objective of the CATE program was to utilize ceramic components in a highway vehicle gas turbine engine, thereby reducing fuel consumption by improving engine cycle efficiency due to operation at higher temperatures. The Allison CATE 404-4 was the test engine for this program. An evolutionary approach was employed, beginning with the introduction of ceramic components at 1900 F turbine inlet temperature. As test results from the 1900 F-configuration ceramic components became available, the 2070 F-configuration components were designed. Both the 1900 F and 2070 F ceramic components were rig and engine demonstrated to maximum operating conditions. The CATE program has provided a sound technology base for ceramic components in gas turbine engines. This technology is being used in several areas at Allison, including development programs for the AGT 100, the low heat rejection diesel, the industrial Model 501-K engine, and the Teledyne Excentrix cruise missile engine.
