General Electric Company is conducting a conceptual design study under the sponsorship of NASA-LeRC/DOE (Contract DEN 3-312) to evaluate the feasibility of a ceramic automotive Stirling engine. Using the Automotive Stirling Reference Engine design as a reference, a preliminary determination of the feasibility of using ceramic materials on the hot side of the engine is being conducted. The performance and benefits which may be derived from the use of ceramics have been estimated. Estimates of manufacturing and operating costs are being made. So far the investigation is quite favorable for the feasibility of a Ceramic Automotive Stirling Engine. The program is presently continuing with the evaluation of material processes, fabrication techniques and manufacturing cost estimation.
