The complex inter-relationships that are encountered in providing a safe atmosphere within a closed environment are described. To ensure that new equipments are suited for service in the demanding environment of a nuclear submarine it is necessary to pursue a rigorous development programme. The development of the new Solid Polymer Electrolyte electrolyser is described to illustrate the approach adopted to ensure that the production equipment meets the design specification.
