The technique for cavitation erosion tests with painted propeller models, which has been developed by SSPA forms the basis for the investigations presented here. The experience from a great number of such erosion tests carried out in the SSPA cavitation laboratory, with models of ship propellers in wake fields indicates that it is the character of the cavitation, which is decisive whether erosion will appear on the propeller blades. So called 'foaming' cavitation consisting of small air bubbles has been found particularly aggressive. This paper aims at penetrating the conditions for appearance of this type of cavitation especially on the suction side of the propeller blades. Special attention has been paid to the geometry of the propeller and the variation of the velocity in the propeller field.
