The space shuttle hydraulic systems have performed very well during the first seven flights, five on Columbia and two on Challenger. All of the components are state-of-the-art and have adapted well to the space environment. A very thorough test program consisting of component qualification and progressing through system verification and cerification testing has assured this success. A great deal of effort has been expended in recent years to develop electromechanical flight control systems to replace hydraulics. So far nothing has become available that can deliver the performance with as low a weight as the present hydraulic system on the space shuttle orbiter. Hydraulics has successfully gone into space and will enjoy a good future there.
