The presentation is based on four studies undertaken for Transport Canada in 1981. Investigations included the use propane as a fuel for both spark ignition and compression ignition engines. A summary review of the opportunities for the use of propane as a motor fuel and the impediments to market penetration are presented with particular emphasis on relative fuel prices and government tax incentives. Criteria for evaluating alternative candidate transportation fuels which could be introduced in the next 10 years are proposed. National benefits and disbenefits of reducing propane surpluses currently exported and utilizing the energy as a domestic transportation fuel are considered. The need to develop cooperative activities between the federal and provincial governments in support of the development of National Standards relating to alternative fuels is identified.
