A common application for adjustable frequency drives is replacement of a variable speed belt drive. During the advent of variable speed DC drives the AC motor was replaced by a DC motor. The adjustable frequency, or inverter drive, however, is often being retrofitted to an existing AC motor. It is essential in sizing an inverter that several characteristics of the application be known, because the relationship between torque, horsepower and current will not necessarily be the same between the inverter drive and the belt drive it is intended to replace. This paper will compare the power characteristics of the two systems. Suggestions for optimizing performance and advantages of both systems will be discussed.
