The purpose of this paper is to discuss the theoretical and operational aspects of the domestic gas meter. A domestic gas meter being defined as one which has the capacity rating of 500 cubic feet per hour or less. The domestic meter is commonly referred to as the cash register of the natural gas distribution industry. Currently there are two basic types of domestic meters being manufactured in the United States. Both utilize the principle of positive displacement to achieve gas measurement. One of the mentioned types of domestic meters is the two diaphragm, three compartment, oscillating valve meter; and the other is the two diaphragm, four compartment, slide valve meter (same basic operating principle of the Glover meter). Both meter types have been manufactured for many years and have proved to be both economical in design and reliable in operation.
