The application of fibre reinforced plastic materials in aircraft structure is desirable because the material exhibits high strength to weight ratio, good fatigue properties and easy formability. Although the materials exhibit high strength along the fibre direction, the strength across fibre and interlaminarly in the structure is signficantly less. In addition, interference with the fibre/resin bond, interlaminar adhesion or fibre alignment would lead to a substantial reduction in the strength of the structure. Providing these deficiencies are considered in component design, the overall advantages of manufacturing aircraft structure from composite materials far outweigh the disadvantages of reduced shear properties.
