Disk brakes are commonly used for the purpose of primary friction braking. Though the disk brakes are very efficient they are prone to unpleasant squeal. In the present analysis a new model of the disk, pad, and caliper system taking into account the interaction between the inboard and outboard pads with the disk is developed and analysed. The effects of Young's modulus of pad, coefficient of friction of pad material and the distance between the pad caliper contact point and the pad geometric centre, on squeal propensity are obtained. The interaction between the inboard and outboard pads with the disk is shown to be significant.
