Interest in the robotic automation of welding in shipbuilding has arisen from health considerations and commercial pressures. However, despite considerable research investment, no significant automation, robotic or otherwise, has occurred unless in a typical tanker production. The general reasons for lack of success are discussed as well as a robotic engineers view of the factors, specific to shipbuilding which impinges on robotic device specification. Solutions to the unique and considerable problems will not be conventional and devices may require a relatively high level of manual interaction. Better coordination between robot designers, naval architects and shipyard engineers is important and compromises will be required of all concerned.
