The shipbuilding industry is somewhat unique in the problems it faces in fabrication: parts for ship structures vary in size from small to very large and are mostly produced in small batches. This has caused a reluctance to automate most of these operations. However, evaluation projects which established the viability of flexible automation in the shipyards were commenced in 1981, and today various applications are being tested for capability and economics. This technical program is being coordinated with the Maritime Administration and the Navy through an industry panel headed by Todd Pacific Shipyards, Los Angeles Division.
