The influence of some design factors on the fatigue life of a typical automobile wheel have been studied using experimental fatigue testing of wheels, strain gauge analysis, and Finite Element Method (FEM) modelling. The main design features, wheel centre thickness and profile shape, plus the effects of styling windows were studied. Also examined was the effect of local thinning of the centre material due to the method of manufacture (press forming). The studies show that the present profiles and method of manufacture do not produce the most efficient design for good fatigue performance coupled with low mass. An improved wheel profile has been proposed.
