The paper presents results of a comprehensive research program on energy saving, using methanol as alternative fuel for SI engines, developed by several public and private Italian entreprises. At first some preliminary problems were studied, mainly: technical and economic effects on present oil-refinery scheme; phase stability, octane values and vapor pressure; basic combustion studies and bench tests; security and toxicity problems. Then a road fleet test of 12 new cars fueled by gasoline-methyl fuel mixture has been carried out, covering 40000 Km within two years. The paper will emphasize the results of the basic combustion studies (ignition delays, combustion intervals and cylinder pressure variations, collected over a wide range of: load, speeds and air-fuel mixture ratios) and the road fleet test (driveability, road performances, octane requirement, vapor lock, exhaust quality, phase stability, corrosive effects, ect.).
