Engine wear with alcohol-gasoline fuels has been reported in laboratory tests especially in the US. This paper describes results of a field test with passenger cars in short distance use in cold climate. Te wearing tendency in both E15 and M15 use is discussed based on the engine wear measurements and enlarged photos of the wearing surfaces of piston rings and cam followers from test and comparison vehicles. With M15 the rate of wear of cylinder bores is found to be greater than with normal gasoline and the corrosive attack on piston rings and cam followers with both E15 and M15 gives an indication of the necessity of formulating the oils specifically for use with alcohol-gasoline blends.
