Both High Ratio Compact Chamber (HRCC) and four-valve versions of the conventional spark-ignition engine can give substantial improvements in fuel economy. The diesel engine fuel economy can also be improved by moving from indirect injection to direct injection forms of combustion chamber, with currently some trade-offs in emissions and noise. Multi-fuel combustion systems can enable fuel economies comparable to those of a diesel engine to be obtained when using gasoline or alcohol as fuel. There will be an increasing trend to design smaller lighter engines with a common core of parts which can be manufactured in a variety of spark-ignited and diesel forms to meet market requirements.
