The report deals with the substitution, in aircraft structures, of precision-forged components for those obtained by milling from the solid. The major advantage of such precision-forged components lies in their substantially lower cost. Comparative tests on a number of substitute precision-forged components for the airframe of the MRCA Tornado were carried out with respect to fatigue strength, surface finish, corrosion, etc. These showed that, with remedial work on the forging dies to overcome specific problems, the precision-forged components met the same specification as the milled-from-the-solid ones. Fatigue strength for the precision-forged components, however, was somewhat lower than that for the components milled from the solid.
