Current motor vehicles almost exclusively use fuels derived from petroleum. Beyond the 1980's, the fuel options available to the automotive design engineer will be determined by socio-economic-political incentives currently debated by our society. However, significant utilization of energy resources other than petroleum cannot take place early enough to shift the source of automotive fuels for the 1980's. An understanding of the fuel situation of the 1980's requires a review of U.S. energy needs and the demands made upon oil. Using data from the U.S. Department of Energy concerning the past and present and forecasts from The Standard Oil Company of California Economics Department for the years forward to the mid-1980's, Figures 1 through 5 may help to explain the supply situation.
