It is essential to know the fatigue life of structural discontinuities in a ship structure. Usually, these discontinuities include welded joints. The stress concentration is intensified by the combination of structural discontinuities and welded joints. This combination can cause cracks to develop. Although an assessment technique has not been established to determine the fatigue life of these areas, the authors investigated this problem by conducting fatigue tests on models. The models used in testing were tank corner structure with bracket and end corner one consisting of a double shell structure. Testing focused on the initiation and propagation behavior of fatigue cracks. The main points of this study were: Taking into consideration ease of handling, stress at hot spots remoted from welded joints can be adopted for use in assessing fatigue life, replacing the use of local stress at welded joints. Stress at welded joints can be examined macroscopically. There is a clear correlation between small-scale model tests and structural model tests. Stresses in structure is divided into three categories with individual specifications for the assessment of fatigue life. Fatigue strength was also assessed under random loading conditions.
