To satisfy future energy demand, a progressive change in the quality of all liquid fuels is inevitable. For the remainder of the 20th century, most diesel powered locomotives will continue to use distillates fuels derived from crude oul. Lower ignition quality ,higher density and viscosity will become the future trend. In the longer term, non-crude oil based alternatives or supplements will become increasingly employed in certain areas. Obvious examples are fuels derived from coal, oil shale and tar sands. However, engine testing of a wide range of anticipated future quality fuels suggests that no major service problems should arise.
