The timing belt is a relatively new machine element which transmits the peripheral forces in belt-driven gears slip-free and with great angular precision. One of the main fields of application of timing belt drives today is the overhead-camshaft (OHC) drive in automobile engines. In this paper the parameters, which influence the transmission of peripheral forces, are discussed and the limits of torque transmission are pointed out. The results indicate that the generally held view which implies that a belt's load capacity is greatest when the belt pitch under the influence of the preload force and the pulley pitch coincide completely, is incorrect.
