This article describes cold-forming processes used in the manufacture of two types of automotive rods. Specialized equipment was developed for cold forming these parts in a continuous flow of operations, using three-way presses in combination with multiple station mechanical presses. Both types of parts were formerly manufactured by hot forging processes. Cold forging is also shown to result in controlled high strengths, using a carbon-manganese steel (SAE 1541), which assures the designer of yield strengths in excess of 90000 pounds per square inch.
