The vast ocean thermal resource of the tropics can be used to serve all areas of the U.S. through the production at sea of fuels or energy-intensive products that can be transported to market by ship. The Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) process can be used onboard slowly cruising plantships to generate electricity for the distillation and electrolysis of seawater to make H2 and O2 and provide power for additional processes. This paper addresses the plant concepts for, and estimated costs of ammonia, liquid hydrogen, and methanol and its higher-hydrocarbon, liquid fuel derivatives (e.g. gasoline). Methanol, an excellent automotive fuel now used in racing cars, also is excellent for use in onshore fuel-cell power systems, a means for delivering OTEC electricity anywhere in the world. Commercial viability for these OTEC approaches by 1990 is indicated. (DePo)
