An increasingly important use of heat pipes has been in the area of space radiators used to maintain a proper spacecraft heat balance and to ensure satisfactory equipment temperature levels. To assist the engineer in the design of this important component of a spacecraft thermal control subsystem, a complete procedure to be conducted for an optimized design has been developed by Aeritalia and is discussed in some detail in this paper. The procedure employs a 'probabilistic approach' using the Monte Carlo technique to allow an evaluation of the influence of the decisional parameters on the heat pipe radiator performance. Following the results of the probabilistic approach an 'optimization approach' is implemented to define the solution to be selected. In addition a 'sensitivity analysis' is conducted to define the range of variation on the heat pipe radiator performance due to computational uncertainties, non deterministic boundary conditions including random variations and manufacturing tolerances.
