Tests were conducted in service to verify information and gather new insight into the effects of various brake shoes as they influence the temperature of 36 Cel (914 mm) freight car wheels. Tests were run with three types of brake shoes, cast iron, high phosphorus cast iron, and Anchor composition with the car empty and loaded. Also, some limited tests were run with the handbrake applied. Temperatures were measured at seven internal locations, using embedded thermocouples. A silicon pin diode which detects hot spots on the tread by infrared radiation was also used. It is our intension to better understand the conditions a freight car wheel encounters in service. This enhances the design of laboratory dynamometer tests and computer stress analysis programs which attempt to depict service conditions. (Wassmann)
