It is urgently required to reduce noise emitted by heavy-duty vehicles. To this end, four major manufacturers of heavy vehicles jointly implemented a project, 'Development and Research of Low Noise Heavy Duty Trucks', under the guidance of M.I.T.I. ISUZU MOTORS LIMITED conducted research into reduction of cooling system noise. As for heavy-duty vehicles, cooling fan noise is one of the biggest contributors of overall vehicle noise, second only to that of the engine itself. Our experimental research works described here, were carried out by classifying the subjects into the following three kinds: Research concerning specifications and layout of cooling elements affecting noise characteristics and air flow. Research into heat dissipation rate of radiator. Research into developing the optimum low-noise cooling system by coordinating. From the test results, it was determined that the best way to reduce the cooling system noise more efficiently is to decrease the fan speed while improving the cooling performance by using a larger fan and radiator, bellmouthed fan-shroud and alternating the system layout.
