Research on manoeuvrability is indispensable for design of new type of vessel. Manoeuvring model test are performed for this purpose, and there are two kinds of fundamental model test techniques. One is a captive model test such as a rotating arm test or a planar motion test, by which hydrodynamic forces acting on a hull can be measured. The other is a free sailing model test by which ship motion caused by rudder and propeller action can be directly observed. The facilities and techniques concerned with the manoeuvring tests are introduced briefly here. (Wassmann)
