Experimental investigations on the shafting of a 26000 kW propulsion system of a single screw container ship were carried out during trials to find the hydrodynamic stiffness and damping of the thrust bearing. A mathematical model of the shafting was introduced and numerically studied by varying the main parameter. Results showed a strongly marked non-linear behaviour of the lubrication oil film, resulting in extremely low stiffness and damping properties at the mechanical longitudinal resonance of the shafting. This phenomenon gives an explanation to the large longitudinal vibratory amplitudes observed by the author in several shafting systems during the last few years. (Wassmann)
