This paper discusses factors affecting the design and operation of a hydrostatic split power transmission for a city bus drive using an hydraulic accumulator for energy storage. The salient features of the accumulator selection are detailed for use in a mobile regenrative application. The incorporation of the accumulator into the transmission and the basic method of operation are also discussed. Several alternatives for operating this transmission during braking were examined by digital computer simulation to assess the braking capability and the energy recovery potential. The acceleration ability using accumulator stored energy was similarly examined and has shown performance levels at least comparable with conventional buses. Some recommendations are made for a suitable bus regenerative system. There has been no attempt in this paper to compare this type of transmission with those involving other energy storage devices such as flywheels or batteries. (wassmann)
