The prop-fan propulsion system has great potential for fuel savings in high-subsonic-speed cruise. Major problems barring the acceptance of this concept - demonstration of structural integrity and noise reduction - are being attacked along several lines, and attention is now swinging to design of the propulsion installation that will permit the prop-fan to realize its potential. This paper presents a survey of the problems in prop-fan installation design, discusses the tools available to deal with these problems, and points to areas where additional work is needed. The work is based on design studies for a prop-fan aircraft. (Wassmann)
