An experimental investigation has been made of blunt fin-induced shock wave turbulent boundary layer interactions. To complement an earlier study, emphasis has been placed on the fin itself and the region ahead of and immediately outboard of the blunted leading edge. Surface pressure distributions have been obtained for four different incomming boundary layers having thicknesses in the ratio 16:1. The freestream Mach number was 3 and the unit Reynolds number 63 millions/m. Initial analysis of these data, in conjunction with those from other studies, indicates that this type of three-dimensional interaction is controlled predominantly by 'inviscid-like' mechanisms. It appears that the three-dimensional interaction is a fundamentally different type of flowfield than the two-dimensional highly Reynolds number dependent viscous interaction. This predominantly inviscid, rotational character suggests that this type of flowfield may be more amenable to computation than originally supposed. (DePo)
