This report is based on a high modulus structural composite research program conducted jointly by General Dynamics and Narmco at the request of an Air Force review team. The main directive was to chemically evaluate problems on thick structural composites, The investigation found water to be 97 % of the total volatile material in 5208 resin system. Ths water was from environmental sources (humidity), not a condensation reaction by product. The absorption rate on the exposed surface is very rapid (60 % of saturation for given humidity level within one hour). The effects of this moisture on composite cure behavior was evaluated to define control limits. The effects of resin advancement and pre-bleed operations on the processing behavior of the resin system was also examined. (DePo)
