The criteria is examined against which a repair organisation is judged, namely service to the user and cost. A comprehensive engineering service in support of the repair organisation, in particular its management and information feedback system is outlined. The range of responsibilities of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers as the repairers of most Army equipment is examined - from advice and influence on new equipment procurement to economic disposal. Emphasis is placed on aspects common to a wide range of civilian repair organisations, and on the necessity to achieve a satisfactory vehicle availability with minimum total repair costs. Enhanced application of Automatic Test Equipment in assisting the achievement of these aims is proposed. (Peters)
