Selection criteria for composite materials substitution in automotive chassis systems are examined. The critical issues that have to be addressed include joint and fastener design, processing of complex shapes, temperature, edge clearance and bearing strength, and packaging constraints. These issues are discussed in relation to a program for the development of graphite fiber applications for a full-size automobile. The paper concludes with an analysis of the design of graphite-epoxy prototype arms for this vehicle. (Jensen)
