This report describes the final test activity on the linear induction motor research vehicle (LIMRV) with a double-sided linear induction motor (DLIM) installed, during the period from June 1976 to August 1977. The report describes the full-scale testing of a 10-pole, double-sided linear induction motor, modified to permit excitation of 9, 5, 4, or 2 poles in addition to full 10-pole excitation. Testing in reduced-pole configurations enabled the effect of a discontinuous excitation at the front and rear of the motor to be investigated, as well as the validity of certain mathematical models that assume infinite primary iron extending in the forward and reverse directions. A mathematical model of the motor is also presented that shows good correlation with test results. The motor had a peak thrust capability of 15.3 kN at 60 m/s at an excitation current of 2000 A.
