1. When the pole pitches and amplitudes of the distributions of m.m.f.s. of the two machines have relation which these are symmetrical in the longitudinal direction each other, the both machines have just the same performance except the vertical force. 2. To reduce the magnitude of the end effect the method for gradually reducing the m.m.f. of the primary winding at the entry end is not available. The performance of linear induction motor (LIM) is degraded primarily because of the end effect which disturb the magnetic field injuriously. It has been considered that grading the winding at the entry and reduces the magnitude of the end effect affected adversely the performance at high speeds. This paper shows that above consideration is unreasonable. The LIMs with half-filled primary endslots in which the primary coils of each phase are in series connection are used to discuss the problem. The models of LIMs are considered, which have different turns per coil in each pole. The space harmonic analysis, in which the length of the stator iron core is assumed to be infinite, is used to study on these models theoretically. In order to check the validity of the theoretical considerations, experiments were performed on a laboratory test facility for a high-speed LIM 2,3 with four poles. The two kinds of the winding in which one has the m.m.f. reduced extremly at the entry end and the other has that at the exit end are examined.
